KOLKATA, West Bengal: Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the underwater metro services connecting Kolkata and Howrah in West Bengal built at a cost of ₹4,965 crore.
Celebrated as India’s pioneering metro tunnel beneath a river, the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section spans 16.6 kilometers beneath the Hooghly River. This innovative underwater metro links the twin cities of Kolkata, Howrah, and Salt Lake, featuring six stations, including three underground ones.
The Kolkata Metro highlighted in a statement that the E-W metro corridor stands out as India’s first under-river transportation tunnel, measuring 520 meters in length, positioned 13 meters beneath the river bed. Notably, one of the stations at Howrah reaches a depth of 30 meters below the ground, making it one of the deepest metro stations in the country.
