SHILLONG: After years of being declared as a Smart City, the work on two redevelopment projects has started in the city of Shillong.  The construction work on these projects will take off under the nationwide Smart Cities Mission.

Shillong was included in the Smart Cities project in June 2018. Soon after that, the Shillong Smart City Limited (SCCL) was established. According to SCCL, construction activities for the POLO commercial complex started in November 2020. This commercial complex will have six stories and its total built-up area is 12,539 sq.mt. Another project for which the construction has commenced is the redevelopment of the Municipal Market and parking area at Laitumkhrah.

Under the prestigious Smart Cities project, Government of Meghalaya has planned to construct a total of 6 km of smart roads at 16 locations of Shillong. Moreover, the state government will also construct rainwater harvesting systems at several locations of the city at an estimated cost of Rs 23 crore, and the tender for the same was floated earlier this year.
