CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: According to Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for Department of Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu (TN), the state would be able to experience inclusive growth once the projected Parandur Greenfield Airport is operational, who made the announcement on Wednesday.

During a conference titled ‘Greenfield Airport: Timely Initiative to Fast Track TN’s Growth’ that was put up by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Ltd, Thennarasu stated that in addition to passenger traffic, the new airport would be able to handle freight, accept maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) work, and can also accommodate wide-bodied aircraft. It will be built at an estimated cost of ₹20,000 crore. In line with the government’s goal of building an economy worth $1 trillion, he said, the new airport will be a ‘milestone.’

The nuclear power plant is located in Kalpakkam, and the bird sanctuary is located in Vedanthangal. The lake of Pulicat is located to the north of Chennai. Tambaram. The upcoming airport will be far away from the main city but the minister emphasised that it can be made accessible just like the Tokyo airport which is also outside the city but is well connected to the main city through public transport.

On being queried whether the existing airport could be expanded as opposed to making a new one, he said that geographically it is not possible. For instance, if you wanted to expand the Meenambakkam airport, you couldn’t since there’s river on one side and land on the other side which is either used for defence purposes or residential.
