BHUBANESWAR: As the Omicron variant spreads, the cases have started increasing. Makes you question if the wait for a third wave of the pandemic is over?

In the last 24 hours, Odisha noted a 69 per cent spike in fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, December 8, against 151 cases a day before. According to experts, the spike could be owing to rise in daily testing by 25 per cent. Currently, there are over 2,137 active COVID-19 cases in the state with highest concentration of 928 in Khordha.

The spike is being especially noted in six districts that have been noting 150 cases on average each day for a month now. The cases rose from three to 22 in Mayurbhanj, six to 19 in Sambalpur, six to 16 in Jajpur, one to 14 in Angul, and six to 12 in Cuttack.

Odisha has been making the headlines in recent days as the state is observing a spike in COVID-19 cases. However, a decline in the fresh COVID-19 caseload is being observed in the month of December as it came down to 105 on December 6.

Multiple clusters have been recorded from educational institutions around the state contributing to the increase in cases, as per the officials. They reported that despite an increase in instances in numerous locations including Bhubaneswar, there has been no significant increase in hospitalizations.
