ISRO to assist in development projects in northeastern states

GUWAHATI: Jitendra Singh, Minister of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, on June 10 announced that  Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be assisting development projects in the Northeast by offering optimum utilisation of satellite imaging and other space technology for accomplishments of targets.

While chairing a meeting of MoDNER and ISRO scientists, Singh said that six out of the eight states of the  northeast have already sent their proposals for execution by the ISRO, while the wo, Sikkim and Assam. ISRO is set to work on development projects in the Northeast through space technology and will contribute by offering optimum utilisation of satellite imaging and other space technology applications for better accomplishment of infrastructural projects in all the eight states, he added.

Presently, with the funding of the MoDNER and the National Economic Council, ISRO is monitoring and geo-tagging 67 projects at 221 sites in all the eight states. Singh said that this is a first of its kind initiative in India, where there will be an institutionalized involvement of the ISRO in mapping and sharing of data for developmental projects. It can become a model for other states as well.
