NEW DELHI: A Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre is launched at Indian Institute of-Madras (IIT-M) with support from an agency of Government of Germany to tackle the global water security issues and adapting the climate change. IIT-M will host the hub with a satellite hub at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok. It was inaugurated on June 30, 2021 in the presence of dignitaries from IIT-M and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre is meant to act as the enabling platform which incentivizes, bundles and magnifies the future efforts towards higher education, research, technology and knowledge sharing. It is under the leadership of Professor S A Sannasiraj, Department of Ocean engineering, IIT-M. Moreover, a joint doctoral research programme to promote the inter-disciplinary works in order to bring the novel knowledge to tackle the water security under global partnering institutes is launched.
The partners of the project share a common thought of science-based solutions and global innovations network must go together with a local and global stakeholder through dialogue. Professor Dr Jurgen Stamm, Dean, Technische Universität Dresden, said that this centre has three pillars which are common teaching activities for students and experts, joint research work for PhD projects and simulation of enhanced transfer activities.
The centre will immensely contribute towards hydrodynamic, wave and morpho-dynamics modelling capabilities of IIT-M. This would complement IIT Madras’ expertise on the adaptation and rehabilitation measures of coastal infrastructures.
