NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has given its go ahead to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct mayoral polls on April 26. However, the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi, Vinai Kumar Saxena, is yet to appoint a presiding officer for the mayoral elections.

The process to appoint the presiding officer begins when the municipal secretary presents a proposal regarding the same before the MCD Commissioner. Later, it goes to the urban development secretary, chief secretary, UD Minister, Chief Minister and lastly the LG.

Civic officials have also informed that the polls could be postponed in the absence of the presiding officer. The official said, “So far, we have not got any information on whether our request to appoint a presiding officer has been accepted. We will only be able to decide the further course of action once we get some clarity.”

Despite all this confusion and uncertainty, the mayoral polls are scheduled to take place in the first house meeting of the MCD and mentioned in the urban local bodies’ agenda.
