GOI ratifies Delhi delimitation report

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), Government of India, through a gazette notification, has ratified the delimitation exercise of municipal wards in Delhi. With this, the way for local body elections has been cleared which were postponed in April 2022.

The 800 page long gazette notification reads that the national capital will be divided into 250 wards, out of which 42 will be reserved for the Scheduled Caste candidates. Before the merger of three corporations, namely, North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), there used to be 272 civic wards in Delhi.

As per the Press Trust of India (PTI), the final delimitation report was submitted by the committee to the MoHA on Monday, October 17, after considering the suggestion and recommendations received from the public.

PTI report suggests, now that the delimitation exercise is over the government will ask the State Election Commission (SEC) to go ahead with the election plan. The reports suggest that local body elections could be held either at the end of 2022 or early 2023.
