NEW DELHI: The three municipal corporations of Delhi have set deadlines of June 2022, December 2023 and December 2024 to shut landfill sites in their jurisdiction. The flattening of these sites has already commenced.
From setting up of waste-to-energy plants to bio-mining of legacy waste, North, South, and East Delhi Municipal Corporations are striving to flatten the landfill sites that fall in their respective areas, because these sites have turned into huge garbage mountains. The city generates around 11,400 metric tonnes of garbage, out of which nearly 6,200 metric tonnes are dumped at Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa. The authorities of North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that nearly 60 lakhs metric tonnes of garbage is lying at the Bhalswa landfill site, and 24 trommel machines are engaged in processing of legacy waste per day. For South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the civic body has set a target to stop the dumping of waste at the Okhla Landfill site by June 2022.
“Through all these waste processing measures, we will be able to shut the Okhla landfill site by the end of 2023,” Mukesh Suryan, Mayor, SDMC, said. He further added that municipalities have tied up with the government and few private organisations for waste segregation and its processing.
