KOCHI: S Suhas, the newly appointed District Collector of Kochi has banned all non-recyclable plastic in Fort Kochi beach-cum-heritage zone. The new ban was imposed to curb down the heap of plastic waste which was polluting both air and water. If someone found disposing plastic in the restricted area, he/she have to pay a fine of Rs 1000. The official press release said, the responsibility of implementing the order rests with the District Police Chief (Kochi City), Sub Collector and the Kochi Corporation Secretary.

Items such as plastic carry bags, non-woven carry bags, plastic flex, banners, cups, straws, spoons, bottles, cooling films, decorative items, pouches, and items made of thermocol have been banned in the area. Traders in the area are also told to ensure that their premises are clean and free of plastic. If they found violating the rule they will have to pay a fine of Rs 2000, repeated offence will result in Rs 10,000 as fine. To keep their area clean traders are told to install bins in their premises to collect biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
