CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: The Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to bring in international support for the urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state, to ensure proper implementation of the ban on single-use plastic items in their area of jurisdiction. PricewaterhouseCoopers, an international management consultant, has been chosen to assist the ULBs.

The firm has been asked to establish a project management consultancy (PMC) which will provide advisory assistance to local bodies to implement the single-use plastic ban.

The firm will act as a third-party monitoring agency and provide the analysis report on single-use plastic ban at the district level. The PMC will also highlight the areas where the civic bodies have gone astray in implementing the plastic ban.

The Government of Tamil Nadu imposed a ban on single-use plastic in 2019. Apart from that, Tamil Nadu was also among the first states that brought together all the producers, importers and brand owners under the ambit of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Any company that comes under the ambit of EPR has to collect the generated waste and recycled it, after which they get a certificate from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB).
