76th UNGA session set to unveil with focus on pandemic, climate

NEW DELHI: The 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is all set to kick off where countries will discuss extending COVID-19 vaccine access and mitigating climate change.

The session will continue till September 27 and the delegations will be limited to just four members each in the main UN hall. Side events will be majorly virtual. More than 100 world leaders are expected to take part in the event, including Joe Biden, President, United States of America (USA); Boris Johnson, Prime Minister, United Kingdom (UK); and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President, Turkey, etc.

The UN wants member countries to have face-to-face conversations in order to address the climate crisis issues. Johnson will call the member countries for concrete climate action and Biden will focus on ending the COVID-19 pandemic, combating climate change and defending human rights, democracy and international rules-based order.

The foreign ministers of five permanent members of the UN Security Council are expected to discuss the issues of Afghanistan in a meeting on Wednesday, September 22. The event will end with leaders of Asia – Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison, and Prime Minister of Japan Yoshihide Suga, heading to Washington for in-person meet of Quad Bloc.
