SOLAN: Following the outbreak of jaundice in Solan region, where 834 cases of jaundice have surfaced since 2016, authorities are planning to install the state’s first UV system at the lift water supply scheme of the Ashwani Khud by the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) department. The UV system would be capable of disinfecting 5 million liters of water per day, which would then be circulated to 22,000 people living in the region. The installation of the plant would begin in June this year and Rs 85 lakh has already been incurred by the authorities for the project. The third party which has been engaged in the installation of the plant will also be responsible for its annual maintenance for the next 5 years.

Sanjeev Kaul, superintending engineer, IPH department, said that the UV system can destroy 99.99 per cent harmful micro-organisms without adding chemicals or changing the taste or odour of water.
