NEW DELHI: In the previous week, new cases soar in the United States of America (USA) by 24 per cent to more than 485,000, while the number of tests undertaken rose by 5.5 per cent, says a Reuters analysis of the state and country records. Across the US, over 5,600 people have lost their lives because of the virus in the week which ended on October 25, up by 15 per cent as compared to the preceding week. A rise in number of deaths was seen for at least two consecutive weeks in 16 states, in comparison to nine states earlier.
According to the Reuters analysis, the death rate more than doubled in seven states namely – Connecticut, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, Idaho and Wyoming. Nevertheless, death rate in Texas, Florida and California still remains more than the previously mentioned states. Wisconsin is another crucial state which witnessed a rapid increase in new cases in the previous week.
The World Health Organisation suggests that rate above 5 per cent is a matter of concern as it indicates that there are more cases in the community that are not diagnosed yet. Since the pandemic had started, more than 225,000 people in the US have lost their lives and over 8.6 million have tested positive for coronavirus.
