NEW DELHI: A new report released by the United Nations says that our planet is moving towards global warming of 2.7 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. The report on global emissions targets was released by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary General, UN, commenting on the report, said that the planet’s current path is catastrophic. He added that this report highlights the possibility of breaking of the promise made by world leaders six years ago to pursue the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal of the Paris Agreement. “Failure to meet the goal of the Paris agreement will result in massive loss of lives and livelihoods,” he said.

Looking at the current emissions commissions from countries, the report established that there will be a 16 per cent increase in emissions in 2030, when compared with levels of 2010. This will result in warming of 2.7 degrees above the pre-industrial levels by the end of the century. Guterres said that the world has tools to avoid this event and achieve the target set on reduction of carbon emissions, but the world is rapidly running out of time.
