PALAMPUR: The residents from areas of Palampur lodged a protest on November 16 over the burning of garbage by Palampur Municipal Corporation (PMC) at its garbage treatment plant at Aima Village, which is 2 km from the town.
Aima village has been running the garbage treatment plant and has been declared as one of the best garbage treatment plants in the state. More than hundreds of panchayat representatives from all over the state had visited it and it had also won several awards for the same. However, after its formation, the PMC took control over the plant but due to a lack of skilled workers and technical know-how, the plant has not been fully functional. Furthermore, it has become a health hazard, especially for aged people and those who are located nearby. Large dumps of garbage can be seen burning every day which emits a foul smell and harmful gases. Vinay Dhiman, Municipal Commissioner, PMC said that adequate measures were being taken to address the issue. He further stated that when 15 panchayats were included it became difficult to manage the functioning. He had requested the state government for funds in order to purchase a new unit.
