PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stopped collecting wet waste from the bilk waste generators of the region, including housing societies. These housing societies account for more than 100 kg of wet waste daily. The actions are taken due to the absence of waste treatment at source.

As per PMC, there are about 4500 bulk waste generators within the limit of the civic body. The civic waste management policy has been in place since 2016, which directs the housing societies and other commercial establishments, generating more than 100 kg of waste, to process their own wet waste on-site.

The civic body has served notices to such establishments and asked them to upgrade their wet waste disposal systems. Asha Raut, Head of Department (SWM), PMC, said that the housing societies with more than 50 flats should have their own wet waste management department. “We have asked the officials to check every bulk waste generator daily and initiate actions in case of any violation,” she added.
