KANPUR: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated a section of Kanpur Metro Rail Project on Tuesday, December 28. It is just another step towards realising the Government of India’s mission of improving urban mobility.

The completed section of Kanpur metro will be operational from the Indian Institute of Technology – Kanpur to Moti Jheel. The total length of Kanpur metro project is 32 km (kilometer) with two corridors. 13 km stretch of the project will be underground with an overall project cost of Rs 11,000 crore with completion period of five years. In total, there will be 21 metro stations in Corridor 1 and 8 metro stations in Corridor 2.

The section inaugurated on Tuesday is a 9 km-long stretch containing 9 metro stations. Due to large-scale development in Kanpur city, the number of private vehicles has expanded to a large extent. Hence, there was a long felt need to develop a fast-moving barrier-free public transport system. In spite of the devastating COVID-19 pandemic, the trial run has been conducted within two years of starting the construction works.
