NEW DELHI: On the final day of the Stockholm World Water Week 2021, National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) hosted the third meet session on ‘Zero Liquid Discharge Cities’ (ZLD). Sumouleendra Ghosh, Global Water Lead, Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler ( KPMG) introduced NMCG as an integrated mission focusing on protection and restoration of the Ganges basin.

He commenced by explaining that ZLD is a well-known concept and it is time to extend its span to Indian cities. In order to mitigate the threats that the cities are already facing due to acute water security, it is highly important to emphasize on recycle and reuse of treated wastewater, he added.  The ZLD concept is a way to increase the reuse of treated waste water. NMCG, in collaboration with industries, has incorporated the ZLD concept, but it remained associated to industries only. The need of the hour is to mobilise this concept to the cities.

Lastly, Professor Vinod Tare, IIT Kanpur, suggested reuse of treated wastewater on the basis of geographical locations and it is important to have situation and area specific standards for reuse purposes.
