MUMBAI: Maharashtra is suffering from the shortage of 3,300 Megawatt (MW) of electricity as 13 power generation units are shut due to shortage of coal. Units at Chandrapur, Bhusawal, Nashik and other places have stopped operating. On Sunday, October 10, the electricity demand for Maharashtra, excluding that of Mumbai, was 18,000 MW.
The Department of Power, Government of Maharashtra, has started extracting power from other sources such as hydroelectricity. The state department officials have also appealed to the public that they should use power judiciously at peak hours, i.e. 06:00 am to 10:00 am and 06:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Dinesh Waghmare, Principal Secretary, Department of Energy, Government of Maharashtra, said that the state has coal stock for one and a half days and the state is asking the Government of India for extra coal.
