Maharashtra battles the incessant rains, IMD issues alert

MUMBAI: Due to a wall collapse amidst incessant rainfall in the Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra, six rooms of a chawl collapsed and eight two-wheelers were damaged on Wednesday. “As a result of heavy rain recorded in Thane city, 17 incidents of tree collapse were recorded,” said Santosh Kadam, Regional Chief, Disaster Management Cell. 

Moreover, eight two-wheelers were damaged after a wall of the Thane Municipal Corporation headquarters collapsed and fell on them. Kadam said that there we no reported casualties in the incident. 

Six rooms of a chawl in Dhaniv Baugh of Nalla Sopra in Palghar district also collapsed due to heavy rains. Several districts in Maharashtra struggled to keep up with the rain showers as homes were watered away. 

On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for five districts in Maharashtra that were expected to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 22. For Navi Mumbai and Thane, IMD issued an orange alert forecasting that at isolated places, intense rainfall might occur between Wednesday, July 21 and Friday, July 23.
