KURNOOL: BY Ramaiah, Mayor, Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC), said that the city will be undertaking stringent action against shopkeepers who use plastic carry bags. A media conference at the Municipal Conference Hall was held on Thursday, July 20, which was headed by DK Balaji, Commissioner, KMC. He addressed the conference by saying that a decision has been made to impose a complete ban on single-use plastic in form of covers and bags from August 1.

He expressed disconcertment over the choking drainage system of and around the Kurnool area, Andhra Pradesh. The manufacturers, vendors, shop owners, and users have been warned to abstain from using plastic covers, he said. The shops under the jurisdiction of KMC will have their shop licenses canceled if they are found using plastic bags. Customers are requested to cooperate with officials and avoid the use of plastic.

Ramaiah also appealed to the people to unify, in order to make Kurnool plastic-free. Plastic waste has always been the cause of concern, considering its ill effects on the environment, human and animal life. KMC also suggested alternatives such as gunny bags and paper bags for shopping purposes.
