KARNAL: On July 22, Karnal Municipal Corporation (KMC) has passed a resolution which would allow the authority to penalise people for wasting water. The authority has decided upon the imposition of Rs 1000 fine for the first time offenders; Rs 2000 for the second time and Rs 5000 for the third time. Washing cars with pipes, gardening and wasting water in other purposes would be liable to pay the fine. The decision came in light of a recent report published by Haryana’s Groundwater cell which highlighted the water table of the Karnal block has witnessed a decline of 12.87 meters in the last 44 years. The water table stood at 5.9 meters in 1974, had fallen to 11.69 meters in June 2004 and now stands at 18.77 meters in June 2018. Residents of the city, excluding the unauthorised colonies, are wasting around 2 crore liters of water every day, leading to further depletion.

Rajiv Mehta, Commissioner, MC, said wastage had been resulting in water table depletion and all should stop this.

“I appeal to residents to stop this practice, or they will have to pay fine. We have constituted teams to keep a check on such activities within municipal limits,” he said.
