Kerala: Safe shelters for women to be set up in cities

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government of Kerala has decided to set up safe shelters for women as part of the ‘Ente Koodu’ scheme which is a larger project launched by Social Justice Department, Kerala to provide night shelter to those living on the streets.

Veena George, Minister for Women and Child Development, Government of Kerala, stated that such temporary shelter facilities are being arranged in the hostels of  Women and Child Development Department and have been reserved for a specific number of women.  The state government is also planning to link women-only taxis with the Ente koodu project for their safety.

A mobile app will also be available for registration and details of the facilities, and availability of beds and legal aid will be provided over the helpline 181.

The Women and Child Development Department has also been providing skilling, reskilling and cross-skilling programmes to the women who are forced to take breaks in their professional careers and brings up projects for self–employment.
