India only country in the G-20 forum implementing Paris accord commitments: Javadekar

NEW DELHI: Prakash Javadekar, Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, answering a question raised in the Rajya Sabha said that the world has accepted India’s leadership position in terms of advocating measures to mitigate climate change.

Javedekar added that India is the only country in the G-20 forum implementing the Paris accord commitments on renewable energy and afforestation. He also informed that India is committed to achieve the aim of achieving 175 Gigawatt renewable energy by 2022. The government is also committed to achieve the enhanced target of 450 Gigawatt as intended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by 2030. With the assistance of the private players, the government is advancing with reliable results in terms of production of renewable energy, afforestation and substantial reduction in emissions, said Javadekar.

Responding to another query over the avalanche which occurred in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in 2021, Javadekar said that the government has not permitted any new project in the upper Ganga region in recent years. He also said that any hydroproject in India is sanctioned only after evaluation by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
