AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Friday, August 6, took sou moto cognizance of reports that sewage water is not being treated properly. Sewage water treatment plant at Pirana, Ahmedabad is not adhering to the set norms for Sewage Water Treatment (STP) and the polluted water is being released into Sabarmati river.

Gujarat HC directed its administrative panel to file a petition and issue the same to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), DNP infrastructure Private Limited and Gujarat Pollution Control Board through Principal Secretary, Gujarat Water Supply and Sewage Board.  According to a media report in Ahmedabad Mirror, chemical oxygen demand and bio-chemical oxygen demand treatment norms for sewage water treatment are not being adhered to by DNP Infrastructure Private Limited. However, the civic body continues to allot the contract to the same company instead of penalising them.

“We take notice of the reports and it is shocking to know that the polluted water is released directly into the Sabarmati river and instant action has to be taken in the public interest,” the bench directed.  The release of HC calls for immediate action on the part of the state government and AMC in this situation.
