BERHAMPUR, Odisha: The district administration in Ganjam, Odisha, has decided to implement the greywater management projects in all its urban local bodies (ULBs) by the end of March. There are a total of 17 ULBs in the district, excluding Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Work has already begun on a pilot basis in Hinjili municipality and Chhatrapur Notified Area Council (NAC). Greywater management project in these civic bodies is expected to be completed in two months, informed Nilamadhab Bhoi, Project Director, District Urban Development Authority (DUDA), Ganjam.

Greywater is a form of wastewater which comes from non-toilet plumbing systems, including wash basins, showers, baths, and washing machines. When discharged into water bodies, it greatly pollutes them and as per the officials, nearly 65 per cent of the total household wastewater is greywater.

He said, “We have conducted greywater management orientation programmes for Hinjili and Chhatrapur ULB stakeholders, including chairpersons, councillors, executive officers and officers.”

Similarly, Jubulee Behera, Executive Officer, Hinjili Municipality, said that they have been treating greywater at the household level, lane level (in the vicinity of drains), and community level (at the end of drains).
