NEW DELHI: Government of India (GoI) will soon launch development and infrastructure initiatives in newly declared union territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The biggest support will come from the government’s leading schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to make available affordable housing for everyone, rural road connectivity, self-help groups reachability, skill development programs and Smart Cities Mission.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is planning to declare Leh, the capital city of Ladakh, as a smart city to quicken the growth and development in the tourist spot. The Smart Cities Mission plans to build at least one smart city in every state or union territory.

Two smart cities have already been assigned in Jammu and Srinagar. However, with the bifurcation of the former state, the government might explore the possibility of designating Leh as a smart city.
