GHAZIABAD: Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has decided to hire an outside agency for collection and transportation of e-waste for disposal in adequate manner. The Corporation is set to put a framework in place in one and half months, after which, they will float an expression of interest to hire a firm for the on-ground work.

According to officials from GMC, presently, Ghaziabad has no proper mechanism for collection of e-waste generated in the city, which consequently finds its way to local scrap retailers, landfills, etc, thereby causing environment pollution. MS Tanwar, Commissioner, GMC, said that the corporation will first authorize a vendor for collection of e-waste from households. The vendor responsible will pay the consumers and the corporation. For the same purpose, GMC will tap the extended producer’s responsibility (EPR) mechanism, Tanwar added.

GMC is also planning to establish a control room and an app to facilitate the collection process. MS Tanwar said that this way, city’s residents will be able to call the collection agency for collection and transportation of e-waste from households.
