LONDON: Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown in England amid rising COVID-19 infections in the country. The complete lockdown for the 56 million population of the country, announced on Monday, January 4, can extend possibly until mid-February.
Johnson said that the measures including the closing of primary and secondary schools will be implemented from Wednesday, January 7. Around 44 million people in Britain are already living under harsh restrictions as the country is suffering from the highest mortality rate from COVID-19 in the world. He added that as the country is already under various extreme measures, we need to be patient and work together to fight this new variant of the novel coronavirus.
Johnson said that the new lockdown will be same to that which was announced earlier during the first three months of lockdown, from March to June, last year. Last Tuesday, December 29, more than 80,000 people tested positive for COVID-19 in just 24 hours.
