NEW DELHI: Following a positive response to its programmes for collecting plastic and electronic garbage from homes and businesses, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has selected a private contractor to collect, transport, and safely dispose of scrap metal, old automobiles, and iron objects.

The effort has been announced in a public notice posted on the EDMC website. Once the final agreement is signed, details of costs for various goods, contact numbers, and the time it takes to collect items will be released within a week, according to an official. The duty of integrating the unorganised sector into this chain has also been delegated to the agency. “Many unorganised sectors and industries create massive amounts of scrap but are nonetheless exempt from any regulations governing the material’s proper disposal. As a result, it is critical to develop a chain management system that integrates multiple stakeholders. Now that we’ve chosen a contractor, the next step is to involve scrap collectors in the process so that no material is handled in an unscientific manner,” a senior official explained.

To commence with, one contractor who meets all of the requirements has been chosen, but more will be added to the list as time goes on. According to the official, the project aims to encourage homeowners and business owners in commercial districts to contribute to EDMC’s attempt to recycle waste in an environmentally beneficial manner rather than selling it to local scrap dealers.

“In addition to collecting scrap in a timely manner from residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial zones under EDMC, the concessionaire will also assure its recycling and disposal in accordance with waste management standards,” the official noted.
