THRISSUR: A new project with an aim to create awareness among school students for reducing amount of waste generated and to promote the habit of using eco-friendly materials was launched in the state. The project is called Pencil with the slogan ‘garbage-free surrounding for health’.
The project is jointly initiated by the Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumba shree Mission, Suchitwa Mission, Health Department, KILA, and Local Self-Government institutions and around 20 lakh students are going to be trained under the project in two-day camp which is going to be held in summer vacations.
According to the organizers, students will be made aware of the need and importance of source-segregation of garbage. Recycling of waste, reduction of waste production, laws in connection with garbage dumping, and use of eco-friendly objects are the other goals of the camp.
For the camp 50 students of class VII, VIII and IX from each ward can participate in the camp. A two-day training was conducted for district-level resource persons before the initiation of camps for students at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration. Two Kudumba shree workers from each panchayat participated in the training programme that concluded on April 28.
The ward-level camps will be organised from May 5 to May 15.
