CHANDIGARH: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, has allotted about Rs 43 crore to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) under the toilet building and SWM (solid waste management) components in a big push to the city’s pending development activities.
Rs 3.3 crore has been set aside for toilet construction, Rs 28.5 crore for SWM, Rs 8.9 crore for IEC activities, and Rs 4.5 crore for capacity building. The money has been set aside for a period of five years. The CMC is putting together proposals for these projects, which will be given to the government. The ministry has received proposals for solid waste management. The corporation had previously put on hold its project of refurbishing public restrooms due to a lack of funding. A 33-crore bio-mining project is in underway on half of the dumping field. Money will not be a problem for the corporation to remove the rubbish mountain now that funds have been allocated under solid waste management.
“For toilet construction and SWM components, money has been allocated based on a weighted average of urban population of states/union territories, total urban population of statutory towns, and state area to total country area,” according to the ministry order.
