KOLKATA: Center for Environment Education (CEE) and Calcutta Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) has taken an initiative to train students from various schools across Kolkata and nearby district for waste audit introduced under Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR).
Reema Banerjee, programme director, CEE said, “The main objective of the audit is to reduce waste by imparting training to students, who are members of eco-clubs in schools. They are taught to conduct waste audits, by which they would be aware of how much paper, plastic and food wastes are generated daily.”
The project was initiated in 2012, which covers 50 schools in Kolkata, Hooghly and South 24 Parganas, out of which 30 are government schools. Banerjee said that it will educate students and will make them realise that how much garbage they generate.
The students will be introduced to recycle and reuse of waste papers, pet bottles to make vertical gardens where they produce various herbs used for midday meals. Besides, the schools have been provided with kits to compost food waste. Banerjee added that the students have kept a target to reduce waste by 10 per cent.
Students are also taught water harvesting under the project so that they will learn to conserve water and reduce its wastage.
