COIMBATORE, Tamil Nadu: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has begun repairing the city roads after repeated complaints from residents. V Senthil Balaji, Minister of Electricity, Government of Tamil Nadu, inaugurated the work on Saturday, October 29.
Many of the arterial roads in the city have been in terrible condition for the past two months. Residents have often raised this issue before relevant authorities but their complaints fell on deaf ears.
A month ago, the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration (CMA) allocated ₹26 crore to CCMC for the repair work and the construction of new roads under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP). Even then, the civic body delayed the repair work as they were waiting for the minister to inaugurate the repair works.
According to the sources, 38.09 km long new roads will be built across the central, east and north zone of CCMC.
Dr M Shaarmila, Deputy Commissioner, CCMC, told the Indian Express that the damaged roads will be repaired in the first phase of the project. She added, “We are planning to pave new roads and finish the work before the onset of the Northeast monsoon. All the works will be completed within the next two months.”
