MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned a switch from multiple-pile foundation to monopile foundation technology to construct pillars for bridges and interchanges for the coastal road project. This will help reduce the cost of construction by Rs 12 crore and will also save time.
The civic body will implement the new technology for construction of 10.58 km coastal road project from Princess Street to Worli. The same technology will also be used to construct the piles from Priydarshani Park to Baroda Palace and Baroda Palace to Bandra Worli Sea Link, BMC officials said.
The monopile technology uses only one pile for supporting a pillar, unlike the multiple-pile technology.
This is the first time that this technology will be used in India, civic officials said. On Wednesday, August 4, a proposal for monopile foundation technology was placed before BMC’s standing committee, which claimed to help BMC save Rs. 5.10 crore. It will also reduce the time taken in the construction and facilitate the completion of the project months before its deadline of July 2023.
