Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation declares itself ODF

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) organised a self-declaration event of open defecation-free (ODF), as part of Swachh Bharat Mission activities in the state capital.

The event was organised in the presence of Ashok Chandra Panda, Minister of Tourism & Culture, Ananata Narayana Jena, Mayor of  BMC, Priyadarsi Mishara, MLA (Bhubaneswar North) and Bijaya Kumar Mohanty, Bhubaneswar (Central), K.Shanti Deputy Mayor and Subham Saxena, Additional Commissioner at  Unit VIII Community Centre.

BMC has taken a series of steps to provide access to clean and usable toilet facilities to fulfil the objective of 100 per cent ODF status in all Urban Local Bodies.

Ananta Narayan Jena, mayor of BMC said, “We have constructed community toilets of 164 seats under Project Samman. We have also repaired existing 676 community toilet seats, which are now functional in various parts of the city. We are also slapping fines on those found defecating in the open.”

The mayor declared a complete change in scenario over the past one and half years. The BMC has also constructed public toilets with 154 seats under Project Samman and renovated existing 364 numbers of public toilet seats in different parts of the city.

 Approximately 5,000 toilets are under construction, 320 hybrid toilets which are already functional. BMC issued Work Order to construct 20218 individual house hold toilets out of which 1 2 4 3 5 have been constructed. Also the corporation has passed resolution for imposing fine of Rs 50 for anyone found defecating in open.

Srimanta Mishra, deputy commissioner said, “It is the vision of the state government and our efforts that is yielding results.”
