GUWAHATI, Assam: A week-long ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ began on Thursday, April 28., during which several events will be held to showcase the immense and unique potential of the North East region of India.

G Kishan Reddy, Minister of Development of North-East Region, Tourism and Culture, Government of India said, “It will be a celebration of hope, aspiration and vision for a developed and prosperous north-east region.”

On the inaugural day of the event, a half Marathon and a Cyclothon were held at Khanpara, Guwahati, to mark the beginning of the celebrations. From 29th onwards, each day will be celebrated under a different theme across the 8 north-eastern states of India, which is to be attended by the concerned Union Ministers. The ministry further announced that the President of India Ramnath Kovind, and all the Governors and Chief Ministers of the north-eastern states will be attending the valedictory function on May 4.

The themes of the 7-day festival in different states are: –

  • Shillong, Meghalaya- Investment Potential and future energy needs of North East
  • Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh – The welfare of Tribals and Border Management
  • Gangtok, Sikkim – The Smart City Revolution in the NE
  • Agartala, Tripura – Role of women in the development of NE
  • Aizwal, Mizoram – Eco-Tourism in NE.
  • Dimapur, Nagaland – Agriculture, Horticulture and organic products potential of North East.
  • Imphal, Manipur – Sports potential of the NE will be celebrated as a parallel Sports Week. The culmination would be celebrated.
