Earthquake jolts Mizoram, PM assures support

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga of all possible support from the Centre after an earthquake jolts the northeastern state on Monday, June 22, damaging houses and roads.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at 4:10am with its epicenter at Zokhawthar, 27 km south-southwest of Champhai, Mizoram on the India-Myanmar border.

Another earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale, struck 25 km east-northeast of Aizawl, Mizoram at 4.16 pm yesterday.

The quake partly damaged several houses and buildings and also caused cracks on highways and roads at some places in Champai district.
