NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has claimed that the Delhi Metro has become the first Metro project in the country to fetch power from a waste-to-energy plant.
“From the beginning of this month, the DMRC started acquiring 2MW power from a plant of M/s East Delhi Waste Processing Company Limited, established in Ghazipur. This is the first attempt of any metro project in the country, in which energy can be utilised from waste-to-energy plants, DMRC spokesman said. Electricity is being used to operate the Pink Line (Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar).
The DMRC will take approximately 17.5 million units per annum from this plant. However, the energy will depend on the actual generation from the plant, the spokesman said. This facility has been set up to process up to 1,500 tonnes of waste per day and generate 12MW of power. It is India’s first waste-to-energy plant to comply with the Euro norms. DMRC spokesman said that metro is world’s first rail-based organisation to claim carbon credits. “At present, DMRC is producing 28MW of electricity from installed rooftop solar power plants in its stations, depots, and residential premises,” he said
