Chhattisgarh inaugurates largest solar plant with battery storage system RAJNANDGAON, Chhattisgarh: The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India, has commissioned the country’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), that stores energy using solar energy. The 40 MegaWatts (MW)/ 120MWh BESS with a solar photovoltaic (PV) plant that has an installed capacity of 152.325 MegaWatt-hours (MWh) is located in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh. The energy would be purchased by the state of Chhattisgarh, thus contributing to meeting the peak energy demand of the state using green electrons and also towards its renewable purchase obligations. The project has been dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi via video conferencing. The project using solar panels and battery storage represents a monumental leap forward in the generation and use of renewable energy. This high-tech facility uses 2,39,000 bifacial solar panels, each boasting a capacity of 660 watts. This advanced setup ensures a round-the-clock power supply, even during nighttime, courtesy of the integrated battery system. The whole setup produces a whopping 5,00,000 units of electricity every day and is expected to reduce about 4,50,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, supporting the use of clean energy. The project has been constructed with funding from the World Bank and Clean Technology Fund under the Innovation in Solar Power & Hybrid Technologies Project.
