Nizamuddin renewal project bags two awards

NEW DELHI:  The urban renewal initiative has brought dual joy for Nizamuddin Basti and Aga Khan Trust for Culture as it picked up two awards from United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on Thursday, December 2. The award was presented on ‘Recognition for Sustainable Development’ and ‘Award of Excellence’.

 In Nizamuddin Basti, the urban renewal and conservation process is under progress which comprises of 20 monuments and heritage structures. Besides the conservation of Chausat Khamba, Ataga Khan’s tomb, Nizamuddin Baoli, the project also emphasized on improving the education, health, sanitation, and employment prospects for the communities around. Moreover, the self-help groups located around the area were also benefitted by the initiative as it turned small locality food stalls into fully functional kitchens.

Among other revivals, the most important conservations of the project entail the early Mughal architecture of Ataga Khan’s tomb. The conservation includes restoring the ornamental plasterwork on the interiors.
