LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has completely banned the dumping and littering of solid waste in unathorised locations in Uttar Pradesh. The ones found to be violating this ban will have to pay a fine ranging between ₹5000 and ₹50,000.

In its July 26, 2024, order, the environmental court said, “We specifically direct that there shall be complete prohibition on littering/dumping of solid waste at unauthorised places, particularly roadsides, rivers, waterways, wetlands, lakes, nalas, panchayats, or revenue lands, land owned by PWD (Public Works Department) or other various authorities in the entire State of Uttar Pradesh.”

The first instance of flouting the ban will attract a fine of ₹5000; if caught a second time, the violator has to pay ₹10,000. In cases of bulk waste dumping, waste generators, urban local bodies, or any others caught, they shall have to pay a fine of ₹25,000 in the first instance; if caught again, the fine amount will be doubled to ₹50,000.
