SHIMLA: A report, prepared by Himdhara Environment Research and Action Collective, on the environmental damage caused by the construction of hydropower plants in Himalayas has led a group of environmentalists to demand for the withdrawal of the ‘green’, tag assigned to the hydro-power projects and ban the subsidising of such projects in the sector in the near future. The report is titled “The Hidden Cost of Hydropower” and states that hydro-projects are not environment friendly.
Manshi Asher from Himdhara said, “Over the last few years increasing evidence has emerged that hydro power production may not be so ‘clean and green’ after all. This document compiles evidence of the impacts triggered by underground construction for run of the river (ROR) hydropower projects, highlighting the issues of environmental hazards and risks involved.” The report highlights that the construction of hydropower plant contributes to the already substantial risk of geological instability and climate change related disasters like flash floods and cloud bursts in the area. Around 10 mega hydropower stations are located in the medium and high-risk landslide areas of the region, putting the local population at a heightened risk. Case studies like that of the Parbati II, Karcham Wangtoo, Kashang and Bajoli Holi projects have been used to illustrate how there has been drying up of springs, damages to houses, farms and forests from the areas in the vicinity of the plant.
