DISPUR, Assam: Assam’s capital experienced heavy rainfall, which resulted in waterlogging in multiple areas, causing inconvenience to commuters and school students.

Almost all peripheral roads in the city reported water accumulation and people were stranded in their vehicles for hours amid heavy traffic.

Ambulances, school students, and people returning from work were stuck till late at night due to inundated roads.

“Given the flash flood caused by heavy rains in the Guwahati city, all educational institutes, both government and private, including colleges, and coaching centres will remain closed till further notice, within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area,” a GMC official said.

Waterlogging was reported from Anil Nagar, Zoo Road, GS Road, RG Baruah Road, Nabin Nagar, Hatigaon, Dispur, Ganeshguri, Lachit Nagar, VIP Road, Tarun Nagar, Rajgarh Road, Jorabat, among others.

The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland.

Commenting on the development, Bhupen Kumar Borah, President of Assam Congress, said, “Smart city smarting under unprecedented vikash it has seen since 2016. You can’t use the flyovers if the roads below are flooded. Tall claims of development gone down the drain.”
