DISPUR, Assam: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced the creation of sub-districts throughout the state to decentralise administration and enhance local governance.
The new sub-district model is set to be put into effect from October 2, 2024. Sarma highlighted the significance of this initiative and stressed the importance of clear communication and decisive action at the district level.
In a recent follow-up meeting, the Deputy Commissioners were renamed as District Commissioners. During the meeting, Sarma mentioned that two sub-districts will be established in Kamrup metro. A notification has already been issued to outline their functions.
The Chief Minister instructed the District Commissioners to ensure that each district functions as an independent entity. It was highlighted that districts should provide their GDP in addition to the state GDP. Emphasis was placed on the need for districts to concentrate on local governance. Furthermore, specific directives were issued to the District Commissioners of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia to prioritise industries such as oil and tea gardens.
Meanwhile, the District Collectors of Karimganj and Hailakandi were encouraged to focus on the border areas. Furthermore, the District Collectors of Chirang Baksa and Tamulpur were instructed to develop the Indo-Bhutan border areas as tourist destinations.
