WAYANAD, Kerala: Massive landslides in the hilly region of Meppadi in the district of Wayanad, Kerala, killed at least 158 people and injured nearly 200. The locals have stated that more than 180 people are still trapped under the debris.
Amid heavy rain, three landslides have occurred in the district, causing widespread destruction in the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha. Local authorities have established 45 relief camps, providing shelter for approximately 3,069 individuals. Furthermore, units from the Indian Army, the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF), and the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) have recommenced efforts to locate and rescue individuals who may be trapped in the aftermath of the disaster.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared a payment of Rs. 2,00,000 as an ex gratia for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 as compensation for those who were injured.
Several houses have been destroyed, vehicles have been damaged and several water bodies swelled up due to heavy rains. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has further warned of extreme heavy rainfall till August 2, 2024.
