CHANDIGARH: The Indian Institute of Technology- Ropar (IIT-Ropar) has innovated an ultraviolet (UV-C) based sanitisation kit using just a household luggage trunk. The unit uses UV-C Germicidal Irradiation Technology light bulb of 15 watts to disinfect items of daily use like raw vegetables, fruits etc. It is a portable device which can be used domestically as well as offices. The bulb is retrofitted in the trunk, which is lined with aluminium sheets of a certain specification. Item to disinfect is to be placed inside. Esspee Industries, Chandigarh based firm, would carry out the manufacturing of the unit. The company would be producing 20 units per day initially which would be increased later as soon as the availability of raw material increases post-lockdown.
The unit was innovated by Prof Naresh Rakha, Senior Scientific Officer, Dr Khushboo Rakha, Assistant Professor, and TS Anand, Executive Engineer of IIT-Ropar.
