SDMC deploys ‘Jatayu’ to relieve Delhi from dust pollution

NEW DELHI: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) deployed the first set of four new litter picker machines called ‘Jatayu’ to accelerate cleaning on footpaths (pavements) of streets and market places.‘Jatayu’ is equipped with powerful suction pumps with the capacity to remove garbage insubstantial quantity in one go from various markets. Delhi has been suffering from dust pollution for years.The dust from unpaved roads, construction activities, traffic congestions and the dust generated by sweeping of roads and market places with brooms are the major causes of dust pollution in the capital.

As per the SDMC,‘Jatayu’ machines have suction units that are mounted on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) pick-up vehicles. It functions similar to a vacuum cleaner and sucks in all the dust, leftovers on the streets and market places.

An official said that four machines-one for each zone has been launched and will be cleaning major markets and central verges.

Narendra Chawla,Mayor SDMC said, “SDMC has been using 18road sweeping machines and 40 water sprinklers to clean roads but footpaths are still being undertaken by sanitation workers. More such ‘Jatayu’ machines will be procured after looking at the performance of these four machines while the 18 road sweeping will continue operating.”
