CHENNAI: J Radhakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Tamil Nadu, said that almost 90% of people who died of COVID-19 in state-run hospitals of Tamil Nadu within the last two months had not been administered even a single dose of the vaccine. He added that some western districts of the state, where the prevalence of COVID-19 was high, have begun witnessing downward trend in new cases.
Radhakrishnan appealed to the public for getting vaccinated and said that vaccination has become the most important strategy against the novel coronavirus. People who have been admitted to Intensive Care Units are also those who have not been vaccinated even partially, he added.
Radhakrishnan also added that 7.4% of the deaths due to COVID-19 reported in the last two months from government hospitals were those who received just one dose of vaccine. He added that severity of the novel coronavirus is high on those who have not been given vaccine and those who died with both the doses were majorly due to other health complications.
He also appealed to the elderly population of the state to make use of the mega vaccination camps and get vaccinated. 28.91 lakh people were vaccinated in the first mega vaccination camp.
